Walter Bargen, besides having published in over 100 magazines, has published fourteen collections of poetry, six from Timberline. He was the recipient of an NEA poetry fellowship, and has won the following awards: Quarter After Eight Prose Prize, the Hanks Prize, the Chester H. Jones Foundation poetry prize, and most recently the William Rockhill Nelson Award for Poetry. A strong advocate and ambassador for poetry, Bargen was selected as the first ever Poet Laureate of Missouri in 2008.
